Reviewing the Declaration of Martial Law

In response to the attack of the Maute Group militants in Marawi City last 23 May 2017, President Rodrigo Duterte, through Proclamation No. 216, declared Martial Law following the clash, citing rebellion as a justification.

Thereafter, both the Senate and House of Representatives issued legislative resolutions in support of the declaration and indicating that there is no need for them to review Martial Law. These statements generated protest from several sectors of society, echoing the fear from the Martial Law during the Marcos Era.

The enactment of the Anti-Distracted Driving Act (“ADDA”) is a response to the ever-changing demands brought about by technological devices. Enacted last 27 June 2015, Republic Act No. 10913, otherwise known as, “An Act Defining and Penalizing Distracted Driving,” is intended to safeguard the public from the inimical consequences of unrestrained use of electronic mobile devices on road safety.

Get t to know Atty. Angelita S. Calalang


Coming from a family of lawyers, Angel is from the third generation who proudly continues the well-preserved tradition.
She obtained her Bachelor of Laws degree from San Beda College in 2011 and successfully passed the first ever multiple choice exams and memorandum-legal opinion writing under the new format of the Bar exams given by the Supreme Court.

Angel also holds a Bachelor of Science in Commerce, major in Entrepreneurship, obtained from the University of Santo Tomas in 2006. With a strong background in business and law, she aspires to be one of the topnotch corporate lawyers in the future.

In law school, Angel’s favorite subjects include Remedial Law, Political Law, and Civil Law. In her quest to become knowledgeable of actual trial practice, she worked as an intern at the Calalang Law Office on her semestral and summer breaks during her sophomore and junior year in law school. From April-May 2009, she also volunteered as a law intern at the Department of Justice (DOJ) under the office of Prosecutor Merba Waga. With her tremendous interest in Remedial Law and her work experiences in private and public service, Angel intends to focus on litigation in order to harness and master her skills in trial technique.

As a new member of the legal profession, Angel is deeply humbled by the whole experience, looks forward to the opportunity to be of service, and vows to live up to the ethical standards and conduct required of members of the Bar. When asked regarding her edge over her colleagues, Angel has this to say: “There are a lot of brilliant lawyers in our country, intellectually yes, but what our country desperately needs right now are those lawyers who also possess moral intelligence. I firmly believe I possess the same, and that effectively sets me apart from the rest.”
